Cancer Center to Host Instructional Art Classes

The Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center is pleased to host a series of six instructional and educational Art Classes intended for individuals who have been affected by a cancer diagnosis, including cancer survivors, family members, health care workers, and friends. The classes are part of the "Oncology on Canvas" program which was conceived by Eli Lilly and Company as a way to honor the journey of those whose lives have been affected by cancer. Classes will help people affected by cancer express themselves and relieve some of the stress associated with the impact of a cancer diagnosis. The program will be provided under the instructional guidance of local artists Lelia Gilbert, David Cantrell, and Sandy Krage.

According to Charlene Berke, Director of Radiation Oncology, "We're very pleased to provide this program for individuals in Mitchell and the area who have been affected by cancer. Lilly Oncology on Canvas is described as expressions of a cancer journey, and each individual will have the opportunity to express their personal insights and emotions." She added, "I encourage all cancer survivors, health care workers, friends, and family members to register as soon as possible in order to enjoy a fun, stress relieving, and motivating series of classes.  You may attend all or as many of the classes as you wish. The Oncology on Canvas Art Competition and Exhibition accepts one entry from each participant; each student and instructor will select the piece to be entered in one of the traveling Oncology on Canvas exhibitions.

In addition to instruction and education, the Oncology on Canvas Art Classes give participants an opportunity to share their concerns with others who might be having similar experiences and to discuss ways to cope with the challenges that arise with a cancer diagnosis. The Art Classes will be held in the Community Room at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital on six consecutive Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. beginning March 2 through April 6. Berke described the classes, "A variety of mediums will be available for participants including sketchbook drawing, acrylic paints, collage and photography, oil paints, and watercolors. Participants may work in any of the mediums which are being offered and may complete as many projects as they wish, although only one piece will be entered in the traveling exhibition."

There is a $20 charge to attend the Oncology on Canvas Art Classes; the charge will cover the cost of materials and supplies. A complimentary snack will be served at each class. Space is limited and registration is encouraged. For more information or to register, please call the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center at 605-995-5741.
